Adriano D. Emperado was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1926 and lived in a poor section by the name of Palama.  This area was a violent place to live.  Confrontations and fights were a daily occurrence.  At age 8, he began his self defense training from his father and uncle who were professional boxers.  At age 11, he began learning the basics of escrima while living with his older brother on Kauai.  At age 14, he moved back to Palama and began training in Judo under Sensei Taneo at the Palama Settlement Gym.  At age 20, he began training in kenpo under the legendary Professor William K.S. Chow.  He later became Professor Chow’s first Black Belt.  Adriano Emperado ultimately achieved a 5th Degree Black Belt under Professor Chow.  During his development of the Kajukenbo System, Adriano Emperado continued to teach for Professor Chow.  In 1950, Adriano Emperado and his brother Joe Emperado began perpetrating the Kajukenbo System.
